Our Mission & History

Mission
To educate, uphold and celebrate the cultural heritage of the seven Celtic Nations: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, Brittany, Cornwall, and Galicia/Asturias through organized public events offered throughout our community.

History
CSSM started in 1976 as an information sharing organization and expanded in 1979 to a formal organization with officers and structure to offer to the public the Celtic Festival of Southern Maryland.  In 1986 the Society was incorporated in Maryland and accepted as a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational corporation in 1987.

Lisa Fahlstrom
Secretary
Lisa was born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area. She’s a police officer by trade, but very active with the National Flute Association and National Carousel Association. She performs/plays in many community bands and orchestras. She also volunteers at a parrot rescue on weekends. Wanting to get more involved with the Celtic Society of Southern Maryland’s festival, she became the recording secretary since 2016.
Thank you Lisa!

Member at Large
Hector has been helping the Celtic Society for over twelve years - you have most likely seen him at the festival gate or at the concerts. His ancestry has been traced back to the Celtic region of the Galcia/Asturia region of Spain. In addition to his duties as member-at-large, he composes and contributes to the CSSM newsletter – bringing a bit of Celtic knowledge to the members.
Thank You Hector!

Victoria Major
Vice President
Victoria "Tori" is the granddaughter of the legendary Mary Beth Dent, one of the original founders of the Celtic Society. Needless to say, she is the third generation within her family to be born and raised in the Celtic Society / Celtic Festival Family. She is a Highland Dance Instructor and member of ScotDance USA and The British Association Teachers of Dancing. For over 25 years Tori has been involved with either competing or running the Highland Dance competition at the annual Celtic Festival. Having her as the Vice President brings an abundance of Celtic heritage, tradition, Festival experience, and cheer to the Board!
Welcome Tori!

Melissa became involved with the Celtic Society through annually attending the Celtic Festival with the Calvert High School Pipe Band. She was also involved with Mr. Ben William's Anthropology Seminar through the school.  Melissa brings an abundance of Celtic heritage, tradition, and cheer to the Board!
Welcome Melissa!

Mark Dent
Treasurer
Mark has been an active Member since the inception of the Celtic Society at the age of 14. Proud father of 5 kids and 4 grandkids, Mark is the son to the original co-founders Chuck and Mary Beth Dent. Mark has been a Board Member and running the Celtic Society longer than he'd like to admit!  He is also the proud founder of Chesapeake Chimney & Co. that has been a long-time sponsor and supporter of the Celtic Society.
Doesn't he just look so natural in a kilt?!  We will continue to bribe him with meat pies to keep him around as long as possible.
Thank you Mark!

Amanda Mitchell
Member at Large / Webmaster
Amanda's grandfather, Pat Mitchell, started her family's involvement in the Celtic Society / Celtic Festival Family as a piper. The tradition then was passed to Amanda's mother, Monique Mitchell, then to Amanda. Amanda's debut was in middle school as a flash tenor / piper in training for the Calvert High School Pipe Band. She continued to play instruments and sing in high school Anthropology Seminar events. In adulthood, she continues to participate in reenactments, festivals, and essentially following Ben Williams anywhere he takes her. She brings an abundance of joy for Celtic heritage, tradition, and cheer to the Board!
Welcome Amanda!

Thank you to our amazing Sponsors!
