Annual Robert Burns Dinner Category: Celtic Society News and Events Posted at January 25, 2012
The Celtic Society of Southern Maryland (CSSM) is celebrating its 16th Annual  Robert Burns Night on Saturday, February 4th 2012, at the Hilton Garden  Inn Solomons. This celebration offers a formal evening affair for those  who love history, Celtic tradition and Robert Burns, the man and poet.

This formal event is held to honor the birthday of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns. The four course meal with traditional music and dancing is  per person. Social hour and cash bar begin at 5:30pm followed by entertainment and dinner. The menu includes cock a leekie soup, haggis, 'neeps and taties', your choice of beef burgundy or chicken masala followed by a grand marnier bread pudding. Throughout the evening, guests will enjoy a fine performance from one of the region's finest bagpipe bands, world-class Scottish fiddling, and humor in the Burns style.

The Hilton Garden Inn Solomons is at 13100 Dowell Road,  Dowell, MD and is offering a special rate for our event attendees. To make a reservation you can go to hiltongardeninn.hilton.com/en/gi/hotels/index.jhtml or call the hotel directly at 410-231-5079 and make this evening a special mid-winter  mini vacation.

Robert Burns was born on January 25, 1759. Suppers in his  honor began in 1796 when close friends of Scotland's most famous poet, then and now, held the first supper in tribute to the immortal memory of  the poet who wrote about and fervently believed in the equality of man.

Today Burns Suppers have become a world-wide phenomenon,  being celebrated in such surprising places as Japan and India as well as  anywhere else you’d expect to find lovers of Scotland and its culture.  The basic format for the evening has remained unchanged. Wear your kilt,  or favorite formal attire in the Celtic spirit to enjoy creative toasts  to the Queen, the President, the lads, and lassies, an ode to the  haggis, fiddles, bagpipes, dancing, sangs and clatter. Retire after  dinner to the cozy heated gentlemens den for a smoke (ladies are certainly welcome, too).
