This 14th annual Burns Night is held to honor the birthday of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns. There will be haggis, lamb, salmon, bagpipes and humor in the Burns style. 250 years ago, Robert Burns was born on January 25, 1759. Suppers in his honor began in 1796 when close friends of Scotland's most famous poet, then and now, held the first supper in tribute to the immortal memory of the poet who wrote about and fervently believed in the equality of man. The basic format for the evening has remained unchanged. It includes an ode to the haggis and bagpipes, “sangs and clatter”. Today Burns Suppers have become a world-wide phenomenon, being celebrated in such surprising places as Japan and India as well as anywhere else you’d expect to find lovers of Scotland and its culture.
