CELTIC ARTS EDUCATION GROUP (CAEG)
The Celtic Arts Educational Group (CAEG) is a committee of the Celtic Society that serves to provide a regular venue in which folks can gather - -“Air Ceilidh CÒmhla Riuthasan Caraidean” (translated - "A gathering among friends"). Among the Society's members, there are many of all ages who travel routinely to the Baltimore area, Fredericksburg and Northern Virginia for quality instruction in Scottish higland and Irish step dancing, bagpiping, fiddling, and hammer dulcimer, to name but a few areas of interest.
The CAEG was formed as a CSSM committee in 2005 to address the growing need for such quality instruction in our local community. Our first event offered a workshop and evening concert with world famous Irish fiddler, Kevin Burke in July 2005. Since then, we have presented other world renowned professional performing artists, such as Master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser, Natalie Haas and the Québécois groups from Montreal, Genticorum, and Le Vent du Nord. These artists are all very interested in our efforts to promote the Celtic Arts and enjoy their visits to Southern Maryland, always leaving with aniticipation for their next visit in the years to come. From the inception of CAEG, many community residents have enjoyed workshops in fiddling, blacksmithing, dancing and hammer dulcimer, as well as the sellout performance of the first annual Winter Celtic Music Festival in 2006.
In support of the Celtic culture, music and arts, our Society members have formed partnerships with community schools involving high school students (such as, Calvert High School, Northern High School and St. Mary's Ryken) in many of our events. One of the most positive by-products of the Celtic Society's participation with these students in the community, is that many of them become active members in the Celtic Society as young adults involved in Scottish and Irish dancing, bagpiping, fiddling, coordination, planning and management of the many aspects of our events, such as our annual Festival, Robert Burns Dinner, etc.
